All the rats I breed are bred for primarily temperament and health. I will not breed from unhealthy rats just to keep a good colour.
I breed russian blue and russian blue agouti in dumbo. I have also just started with a marked line in russian blue and black, these will be Berkshire and Hooded. A long term aim is to breed the marked in dumbo as well, but I want to get the marked bit right first!
My rats are kept in an Explorer, a Royal Suite, and some Freddys. I use whichever substrate takes my fancy when Im out shopping, at the minute its Hemcore (I like this if only for the fact that easy to vacuum when it gets kicked out of the cages!). The cages are kept in the living room so they get lots of attention from us peering at them! They get free time out of the cage, but in the boys case it usually means them hiding down the back of the sofa!, more often than not fast asleep!
The food I give them changes month to month, again it depends on where Im shopping or what I've spoken to other rat keepers about. I think my favourite for them is Mr Johnsons Supreme Rabbit food. I think their coats and overall condition look great when they are on this. They also get liver and chicken, plenty of fresh veg and fruit with some of our left over homemade dinners. We put extra protein in the form of egg food for kittens up to the age of 13 weeks, although I am going to trial Vitalin for the next couple of litters.
Our kittens are old only in pairs, single rats will only be homed in exceptional circumstances. Rats are homed on a pet only basis, meaning I would not like them bred from, but they may go to breeding homes in some circumstances. Please ask for details.
I don't send out questionnaires, but like to get to know people via a few questions on email and some phone chats. Its nothing sinister, I just like to know the kittens are going to great homes. :-)
